If you have considered purchasing outdoor gear, the first thing you notice is that it can be expensive. Browsing websites can also leave you with this feeling that you have to have the best gear they offer.

Is the high price tag worth it? If you’re purchasing something you’re going to use often, you have done your gear research, or it’s something you need to have high-quality, you might consider the best of the best.

However, if you’re purchasing gear you won’t use often, you don’t know if you’ll like it, or are a beginner, you might not need the best item. Sometimes you also just want to save that money—I can certainly relate!

You don’t always have to sacrifice quality for a lower price tag! It’ll take some research, but it is possible to find high-quality discount outdoor gear. Here are some sources and recommendations for purchasing gear based on your budget.

Websites with Discount Outdoor Gear

1. Moosejaw

Moosejaw is a budget-friendly site that typically has several sales and gear options available. They also have a rewards program where you can get 10% back on full-price items.

2. Steep & Cheap

A budget-friendly online retailer that has several outdoor clothing & gear sales. There are several popular brands, daily sales, and plenty of options to purchase gear at affordable prices.

3. Sierra Trading Post

An online outdoor gear and clothing retailer. The website offers several products at a discounted price. Browse hard and find the good deals!

4. REI Outlet

REI Outlet is one of the most popular places to buy gear! Buy online or in their brick and mortar REI shop if you want to try things on and see how they feel.

If you have a membership ($20/year), you’re able to return items within a year of purchase and you get 10% back on all purchases in the form of store credit.

REI Garage Sales

A few times a year, REI will host “garage sales” which is basically a thrift shop for discount outdoor gear. The items are usually random but if you’re on the hunt for a few things, it might be worth it to check it out!

5. Backcountry

Backcountry is one of the biggest online retailers for outdoor gear. While you aren’t guaranteed budget-friendly prices, sometimes you can find truly good deals! They have great customer service, too.

6. Campsaver

Campsaver is another online retailer that sells popular brands at discounted prices. There is also a Campsaver Outlet with additional sales on gear.

7. Amazon

Amazon has several off-brand outdoor gear options available. If you need something fast and cheap, this is a great option. Make sure to read reviews and product descriptions so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Where to Buy Used Outdoor Gear

8. Facebook Marketplace & Groups

Facebook Marketplace can be used to find used gear locally. This is great because you can look at the item before purchasing.

There are also several Facebook groups where people sell used gear. For example, there’s groups like “Backpacking Gear Flea Market” where people buy and sell gently used outdoor gear. There are gear exchange groups by location as well.

9. Outdoor Gear Exchange Online Shop

This online shop sells lightly-used outdoor gear. If you’re located in Vermont, you can go check them out in person!

10. REI Used Gear

Shop a specific section of REI’s website for used gear. You can purchase gear from here knowing it’s been inspected by an REI employee.

11. Geartrade

This is an online marketplace for used gear. Sort of similar to Facebook Marketplace, but specific to outdoor clothes and gear!

12. Ebay & Craigslist

Used item websites will typically sell used outdoor gear as well.

13. Used Outdoor Gear Stores

Depending on where you live, there might be a resale outdoor gear store nearby. Whenever I travel West, I see these everywhere! I have found awesome deals in these stores.

Factors to Consider When Purchasing Discount Outdoor Gear:

  • Season you’re shopping for
    • Know when items will go on sale! If you’re looking for snow pants in the summer, you will probably be able to find some great deals.
    • Is Black Friday coming up? Most retailers offer sales around this time.
  • How quickly you need the item
    • If you know you’re going to need an item in a few months, start looking ahead of time. It’ll give you more time to find a good deal!
  • Gear rating
    • Read reviews of the item before purchasing! Higher price does not always mean higher quality.
