30-Minute Teriyaki Bowl

You could order takeout... or take my advice and have a fresh teriyaki bowl right in your kitchen in just about 30 minutes. While you decide, check out this 30-Minute Teriyaki Bowl Recipe!

30-Minute teriyaki bowl

What is a teriyaki bowl? To answer that question, we must first ask: what is teriyaki?

If you wanna get technical, Teriyaki refers to a cooking technique (of Japanese origin) in which fish or meat are cooked with a particular kind of sauce/glaze. Like many other instances with foreign cuisine, in the US the concept has been generalized and simplified. When you hear teriyaki mentioned, people are usually talking about a sauce.

So, what's that sauce?

What flavor is teriyaki?

Teriyaki sauce (like you'll find in any store) is a sweet and savory sauce that uses soy sauce as the base. Traditionally, it also uses mirin, a type of rice wine. Store-bought varieties will vary in the makeup—I picked the version from P.F. Chang's for this recipe because it's easy to find in a lot of locations. Feel free to substitute with a different brand or even make your own!

Teriyaki Bowl Ingredients

  • ground turkey
  • teriyaki sauce
  • broccoli slaw
  • riced cauliflower
  • garlic
  • pickled onions
  • Optional: green onions, sesame seed

How to Make Easy Teriyaki Bowl

Here's how you can get your very own teriyaki bowl—actually, enough for 4!

  • Heat skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add ground turkey. Brown all sides before breaking up and cooking fully, about 10 minutes.
  • Add garlic. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Add in riced cauliflower. Cook for about 4 mins, stirring occasionally.
  • Add in broccoli slaw. Cook for about 4 mins, stirring occasionally.
  • Cut heat to low. Add in teriyaki sauce and simmer for 4 mins.
  • Top with pickled onions, green onions, and sesame seeds.
  • Enjoy!

How to Meal Prep a Teriyaki Bowl

Some people get the impression that meal prep is a dark art that takes years to learn. Not so! With the right tools—a favorite recipe and some airtight containers—you can meal prep just by making too much food.

In this case, if you follow the recipe instructions as-written, you'll have four teriyaki bowls which you can split evenly into four airtight containers. Top each with your favorite toppings and put 'em in the fridge!

Have more mouths to feed? You can scale this recipe as needed to meet your needs, but you probably don't need to increase the pickled onions and toppings proportionally (unless you just want a lot of those things).
