So often, a real, home-cooked breakfast is a labor of love, with all of the emphasis on labor. If you've ever thrown together a batch of scratch-made biscuits, you know what I mean.
Look, I'm a certified morning person through-and-through. I like to get up and at 'em bright and early to get things moving. But, like you, I have other things I want to do besides cook.
In fact, if I don't wake up starving, I'm sure to be ravenous after my morning workout. I certainly don't have the luxury of waiting hours after I'm done exercising for a breakfast to come together, and my husband, bless his heart, is not always getting up to make us a meal.
So what's got to give? I don't want to settle for something quick that won't satisfy, and I can rarely devote significant time in the morning to making something that might not be ready until closer to lunch—that is, on days where I'm not having brunch, anyway.
Enter this Biscuits and Gravy Bake. Holy cow, does this thing make me feel like I've found some cheat code to breakfast glory.

The b's & g's of your dreams
We all know biscuits in a can can't compare to making them from scratch. We know a gravy comes together best from the pan, and sausage from the farm, and... and...
We're right. About all that. Yet sometimes something shows up that's truly better than all of its individual parts.
Something that's delicious, satisfying, filling. Something that's simple, quick, almost foolproof.
Maybe something like a dish of biscuits and gravy made into a kind of breakfast casserole. Into a kind of bake.
Healthy-ish biscuits and gravy bake
Biscuits? From a can.
Gravy? From a packet.
Sausage? From the supermarket.
Egg whites!? From a carton.
Cheese?!?
The result? Baked breakfast bliss. Get on board.

Biscuits and gravy bake ingredients
The recipe only requires 5 ingredients! Here's what you need:
- can of jumbo biscuits (I like to use the 16 oz Pillsbury Jumbo Flaky Biscuits)
- package original country gravy (I like to use the McCormick Original Country Gravy)
- turkey breakfast sausage (I like to use the Jennie O turkey breakfast sausage)
- egg whites (any brand works)
- shredded sharp cheddar cheese (any brand works)
This recipe will work with other brands of products besides the ones listed.

Substitution ideas
Here are a few substitution ideas to modify the recipe to make it work for you. A few ideas:
- Cheese - Use any kind of shredded cheese on top!
- Sausage - Swap turkey sausage for pork sausage
- Gravy - Use a variation of country gravy you like more (like peppered!)
- Biscuits - Any brand of biscuits will work
- Egg whites - Don't like them? Omit. But I promise it's worth a shot.
- For lower fat: use low-fat cheese or less cheese
- For higher protein: add a little more egg whites
How to Make Biscuits and Gravy Bake
As if the ingredients list couldn't be a snap, this thing comes together in a jiffy, thusly:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Use cooking spray to grease a casserole dish. Set aside.
- Prepare the gravy according to the directions on the package.
- (Usually to prepare the gravy, stir water and gravy mixture together in a sauce pan. Stir together with a whisk. Heat over medium heat and stir frequently until gravy comes to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for a minute. Gravy will thicken upon standing.)
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add turkey breakfast sausage and use a spatula to break into crumbles. Cook until crumbles are browned.
- Cut the biscuits into ¼ size pieces.
- Line the biscuit pieces on the bottom of the casserole dish.
- Add 1 cup of egg whites into the gravy mixture. Stir until combined.
- Pour the gravy and egg white mixture over the biscuit pieces.
- Evenly distribute the turkey crumbles on top of the mixture.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese on the very top.
- Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes or until biscuits are lightly brown on the bottom.
- Take out of oven and let cool.
- Enjoy!

This is the part where I tell you about how this will last 4-5 days in a sealed container.
This is also the part where I tell you that I have NEVER had that last this long.
Because it's gone.
Because we eat it so fast.
It's that good.
How to reheat biscuits and gravy
If you've somehow managed to even let this get cold, pop a portion onto a microwave safe dish and zap it for a minute. I think you could also reheat the whole dish via oven, but, again, I must stress to you that I have never let this thing survive that long.

What goes well with biscuits and gravy?
Honestly, this dish can stand alone, which is why I love it. However, I think it would be awesome to put this into a brunch spread, to compliment it with something light and fresh (such as some fruit), or anything else you could come up with.
It holds its own with a good coffee, however, and a favorite hot sauce.
