Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole

Imagine it with me: juicy ground beef, crispy tater tots, tomato sauce, and lots of cheese. Are you drooling yet? Because I sure am. This Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole recipe is sure to please the whole family. Kids, teens, and adults all love this recipe! With a total time of only 45 minutes, this is a great recipe to throw together on a busy weeknight.

The tater tot casserole's roots are firmly planted in the Midwest. A farm wives' solution for a quick, easy meal has survived and evolved over the years into a comfort food fave. This cheeseburger evolution is absolutely one of my favorites. There are lots of casserole recipes out there, but this one ranks high in the 'cheeseburger casserole recipe' category.

Cheeseburger tater tot casserole ingredients

Gather these ingredients to make this not-so traditional tater tot casserole with all that extra flavor:

  • tater tot rounds
  • ground beef
  • garlic
  • onion
  • diced tomatoes
  • pickles
  • shredded cheddar cheese
  • ketchup
  • mustard
  • worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper

How to make a cheeseburger tater tot casserole

Follow these simple instructions to make this delicious, easy dinner.

  • Heat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Spray a 9x13 casserole dish with cooking grease and set aside.
  • Heat a skillet over medium high heat. Spray with cooking spray. Add white onion, garlic, and ground beef.
  • Brown ground beef until it is fully cooked through. Drain excess grease. Sprinkle meat with salt and pepper.
  • In a small bowl, add ketchup, mustard, worcestershire sauce, and pickles to the ground beef mixture. Mix well.
  • Pour the sauce mixture into the greased casserole dish.
  • Evenly distribute the tater tots in a single layer across the top of the casserole.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese on top.
  • Bake at 375 for 30 mins or until cheese and tots are golden brown.

Cheeseburger tater tot casserole substitution ideas

This is a super easy tater tot casserole, and these substitutions are super easy as well!

  • Ground beef: For this recipe, I used 93% lean ground beef. Use whatever ground beef you usually pick up at the grocery stores. You could also substitute ground turkey for a lower-fat version of this recipe.
  • Diced tomatoes: I used canned diced tomatoes, but feel free to dice your own fresh ones.
  • Pickles: I know firsthand how divisive pickles can be. If you can't stand them, leave them out!
  • Shredded cheddar cheese: Use whatever shredded cheese you have around! Could be sharp cheddar cheese, or even dairy-free cheese if you're trying to make this recipe suitable for a dairy allergy. The gooey cheese is one of the best parts of this recipe.
  • Tater tots:  I use the Ore-Ida Gluten Frozen Crispy Crowns Tater Tots, but you could use whatever crispy tots you have picked up from the store.

How long does a cheeseburger tater tot casserole last in the fridge?

The trick to make this comfort food last in the fridge is to use an airtight container for storage. If you do that, you can enjoy this tater tot casserole for up to 5 days.

Additionally, you can freeze and keep for much longer. Another option for keeping is to put plastic wrap or aluminum foil over the whole casserole dish, but I wouldn't recommend doing this if you plan to keep for longer than a couple of days.

How to meal prep this recipe

To meal prep, make according to instructions. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Split into 6 containers (one serving each) or store in a big container and serve as needed. See below for some solid reheating instructions.

What would go well with a cheeseburger tater tot casserole

I recommend some vegetables as a side dish to balance out this hearty casserole. Green beans, broccoli, or some sweet peas would go splendidly with this easy recipe. In addition, some green onions chopped and sprinkled on top would definitely compliment the classic flavor of this comfort food casserole.

Why is my tater tot casserole soggy?

Casseroles are certainly on the short list of easy recipes, but even they can sometimes go sideways. If your cheeseburger tater tot casserole casserole is a little on the soggy side, make sure you're cooking the casserole uncovered to allow the liquid to evaporate.

Is tater tot casserole good reheated?

Single servings of this casserole reheat well in the microwave. If you stored the entire casserole dish, you can reheat it well in the oven. If you go this route, I recommend using a lower temperature (~300F) for around 10 minutes.

Can you freeze tater tot casserole after you cook it?

You can freeze tater tot casserole before OR after you cook it. If you do decide to freeze your pre-cooked casserole, wrap the container in a cling wrap followed by a layer of aluminum foil.

Make sure you don't leave the frozen casserole in the freezer for longer than 3 months to avoid freezer burn. Simply place the whole container (without thawing) in an oven preheated to 375 degrees and cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until crispy. The casserole will be ready for your dinner table just like you assembled it that day!

Hi! So sorry that ingredient was missing from the instructions — it has now been updated! The diced tomatoes get added to the mixture with the meat and sauce. So sorry it wasn't clear when you made, but I hope it still tasted okay!

I feel like there are a few steps missing. Like where do the diced tomatoes go? In the sauce or in the meat?

Hi Briana, there was a step missing — I appreciate you pointing that out & the recipe card is now updated! You add the diced tomatoes to the meat mixture after the meat is finished cooking. You'll then add the sauce to the skillet and mix well until the mixture is completely coated. Hope that helps!
