​Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken

You know I love easy recipes here at Jordo's World and this is one of the easiest recipes I've ever written! However, just because it is easy doesn't mean that it is not delicious. Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken contains juicy chicken breasts and a flavorful homemade sauce. I promise the homemade sauce is so simple, and so much more delicious than the store bought!

This recipe is perfect for busy weeknight dinners because you can throw it together in the morning the slow cooker will have it ready for you by the afternoon. This is such an easy prep, too! Just throw all the sauce ingredients together and then pour over the chicken in the slow cooker - you're all set! Perfect for a freezer meal, bring this to someone who is need of some extra love and support to stock their freezer up.

  • chicken breasts
  • low sodium soy sauce
  • honey
  • garlic 
  • toasted sesame oil
  • rice vinegar
  • fresh ginger

How to make slow cooker teriyaki chicken

With just minutes of prep time, you'll be done cooking this recipe before you know it! 

  • Place the chicken breast in slow cooker.
  • Add honey, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and vinegar to a small bowl. Mix well.
  • Pour the sauce over the chicken breast. Cook on high for 2-3 hours (low 4-5 hours) or until the chicken is cooked and reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
  • Take the chicken out of the slow cooker and shred.
  • Add the shredded chicken back to the slow cooker. Stir.
  • Top with sesame seeds and green onions.
  • Optional: serve with rice and veggies.
  • Enjoy!

Slow cooker teriyaki chicken substitution ideas

Try out these substitutions for the slow cooker teriyaki chicken:

  • Chicken: This recipe calls for boneless, skinless chicken breasts but you could use any chicken you like best. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs seem like the next best option to me.
  • Soy sauce: I use a low sodium soy sauce, but you could use a regular soy sauce or coconut aminos. Coconut aminos work for gluten-free and paleo diets! 
  • Honey: You could substitute brown sugar or maple syrup here. I do think honey gives the teriyaki sauce the best flavor. 
  • Toppings: Don't sleep on toppings for this recipe! Sesame seeds, green onions, red pepper flakes would all be amazing! 
  • Serve with: So many delicious options for this recipe. Brown rice, cauliflower rice, jasmine rice, white rice, (basically any rice). Use fresh broccoli, chopped bell peppers, brussels sprouts, or snap peas to add some green to the meal.

How long does slow cooker teriyaki chicken last in the fridge?

This crock pot teriyaki chicken recipe will last 5 days when stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Make sure you wait until the chicken has cooled to room temperature before placing in the container and then fridge. 

This is a great option for a freezer meal at all. Whether you're stocking up your own freezer, or planning to deliver a meal to someone else, give this slow cooker teriyaki chicken recipe a try! 

How to meal prep this recipe

This is a perfect meal for meal prep. Make the teriyaki chicken according to the instructions. 

Then, separate into 6 individual and equal portions. Store in the fridge in airtight containers until you're ready to heat up and enjoy!

Is it okay to put raw chicken in slow cooker?

Yes, absolutely. If you put cooked chicken in a slow cooker, it would dry out and not be incredibly appetizing! 

Does teriyaki sauce go on before or after cooking

The answer to this question is "yes". Teriyaki sauce is so versatile and can be used in so many different ways during the process of cooking. It all depends on the dish. 

You can use it as a marinade, to brush on before grilling meat, to drizzle over some veggies, or even as a condiment for dipping. Teriyaki sauce is basically limitless. For this particular recipe, it is cooked right alongside the chicken in the crock pot. Also exciting because you're not just using store bought bottled teriyaki sauce, but making your own! 

What's the difference between teriyaki sauce and teriyaki marinade?

The difference is pretty minimal in my opinion. The sauce is for adding flavor to a dish quickly while cooking. The marinade involves more time in which you soak the meat in marinade for a long period of time before cooking.

    This is a FAMILY favorite! I made it in the Instant pot instead of a slow cooker and it worked beautiful. cook at 19 min and everything came out great!
