Gather all these ingredients and you'll be ready!
- turkey sausage
- egg whites
- nonfat cottage cheese
- tater tots
- cheddar cheese
- salt
- pepper
- garlic powder
Tater tot breakfast casserole substitution ideas
- Turkey sausage: I like turkey sausage for breakfast recipes, but you could substitute another type of ground meat.
- Egg whites: Instead of egg whites, you could use whole eggs. 1.5 cups of egg whites is equivalent to 6 whole eggs.
- Cheese: This recipe (and many others for tater tot casserole) call for cheddar but you can substitute for your favorite shredded cheese!

How to make tater tot breakfast casserole
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Spray a 9x13 casserole dish with cooking grease and set aside.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown turkey sausage and drain excess grease from skillet. Set aside.
- In a blender, add egg whites, cottage cheese, and seasonings. Blend until creamy.
- Pour the egg mixture into the bottom of the greased casserole dish.
- Add the cooked turkey sausage. Next, sprinkle ½ of the cheese across the top.
- Evenly distribute the tater tots across the top of the casserole. Add the remaining cheese.
- Bake at 375 for 40 mins.
How long does tater tot casserole last in the fridge?
After you finish making your tater tot casserole, you can store in the fridge for up to 5 days! This makes it a perfect dish for a breakfast meal prep.
Either store it in the dish you made it in covered with some foil, or place in individual airtight containers. If you go down the individual container route, it is easy for meal prep to grab one out when you're ready to heat it up!
How to reheat tater tot casserole
When you're ready to reheat your leftovers, simply place a portion in the microwave for 1-2 minutes and you'll be ready to go!

Is tater tot casserole a Midwest thing?
Yes! As I said before, this casserole (and many others) find their origins in the Midwest. If you're from the Midwest, it's likely you've had some variation of this recipe before.
What is tater tot casserole made of?
Tater tot casserole has some variation of the same few ingredients. Obviously, the first being tater tots! It has a ground meat, something to add some creaminess (this recipe calls for nonfat cottage cheese), and cheese!
What goes with tater tot casserole?
At the top of my list for a side is some fresh fruit! We typically have some kind of fruit with breakfast, but the sweetness of the fruit would really complement the savory nature of this breakfast casserole.

SO great!!! I’m not a fan of eggs and I loved this. Big hit with the toddler all the way to people in mid 70’s! We didn’t blend the cottage cheese and eggs, just whisked it together. We talked about next time cooking with hot sausage or putting some type of pepper in it to get it an extra layer but it’s great as is!
