Easy Frittata Recipe
A frittata may not be in your go-to arsenal of brunch dishes, but this one will be after you try this easy frittata recipe! 'What exactly is a fritatta?', you may be asking yourself. Well, a fritatta is a Italian-inspired omelette-like dish with lots of yummy add-ins like meat, cheese, and vegetables. It is unlike a omelette as it is cooked in the oven. It is different than a quiche because there is no crust.
I was inspired to make this dish for those of us that are adventurous in our breakfast choices, and want to add a bit of change to the typical line-up. I wanted to add in some healthier ingredients, like egg whites and cottage cheese, without compromising any of the delicious flavor.
This frittata is perfect to whip up on a Saturday morning for your family, and it is guaranteed to impress at your next brunch get-together.
Frittata Ingredients
Here is what you need to make this easy frittata recipe:
- eggs
- egg whites
- nonfat cottage cheese
- olive oil
- small onion
- bacon
- sharp cheddar cheese
- spinach
- salt & pepper
- Optional: avocado, hot sauce
Frittata Substitution Ideas
- Dairy: You can use heaving whipping cream, milk, or yogurt instead of cottage cheese. I used sharp cheddar in this recipe, but you can choose your favorite type of shredded cheese to add-in and/or use as a topping. You can also make it dairy free by choosing DF cottage cheese or yogurt, and DF cheese.
- Meat: You could use breakfast sausage, ground turkey, or ground chicken in this recipe. Just make sure whatever meat you select is cooked prior to adding it to the frittata!
- Vegetables: Use whatever vegetables are your favorite. Some common frittata veggies include peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and asparagus. A frittata can be a great way to use leftover veggies!
- Toppings: I suggest using avocado and hot sauce. You can add salsa, extra cheese, or sour cream.

Does a frittata need cream?
Although it is more traditional to use cream or heavy whipping cream in a frittata, there is no problem switching it up and using a different option.
This recipe uses cottage cheese as a healthier option. Cottage cheese adds protein and has less fat. The cottage cheese does not create any major differences in the outcome of the fritatta. If you don't like cottage cheese, you could use yogurt.
What is the difference between an omelette and frittata?

Besides these differences they actually are quite similar. Both use eggs as the primary ingredient and usually include different meats, cheeses, and vegetables.

What is the best pan to make a frittata?
I've found that the best pan is my trusty cast iron skillet. It is deep enough to accommodate the many ingredients and also distributes heat well so the entire frittata is cooked.
It is also naturally non-stick, which is a great plus. If you don't have a cast iron skillet, don't worry! Just use a big skillet that is also oven-safe.
How do you keep a frittata fluffy?
The best way to keep a frittata fluffy is to vigarously beat the eggs at the beginning of the recipe. This allows for more air to incorporate in the mixture.
Another tip is to let the frittata cool down a little before serving. By choosing not to serve a pipping-hot dish, you'll allow for a better texture.

Some recipes do call for you to flip the frittata if only using the stovetop. I find that this process is an awkward task to accomplish, which is why I chose to finishing cooking this easy frittata in the oven.

Congrats! And this will freeze in an airtight container—let it cool first so the moisture evaporates off before wrapping and sealing.
