What ingredients do I need for this recipe?

This recipe only requires 5 ingredients. One thing I love about the ingredients in this recipe is that it's combining several typical pantry ingredients to make something new and delicious! Here's what you'll need:

  • Chicken breast - This recipe calls for 2 lbs of chicken breast (or about 3 large ones). I've used raw and frozen chicken for this recipe and both work.
  • Sriracha - This will add some spice to the sauce!
  • Honey - To contrast with the spice, the honey will add some sweetness.
  • Coconut aminos or soy sauce - Either one of these sauces will add a little salty and sweet flavor to the sauce.
  • Garlic powder - Adding a small amount of garlic will make a big difference!

Can I make substitutions for this recipe?

I usually stick to the recipe, but there are some substitutions you can make based on dietary preferences and what you have available in your fridge. I haven't tried any of these substitutions but let me know if you do!

  • Chicken breast - Raw or frozen chicken will work for this recipe. Instead of chicken breast, you can try chicken thighs.
  • Sriracha - The is key to the recipe so I would recommend using this.
  • Honey - Honey is another key ingredient, but if you don't like honey or you're out, you could try a maple syrup.
  • Coconut aminos or soy sauce - Either one of these will work great for the sauce.
  • Garlic powder - You could use fresh garlic if you have that! I usually just use a powder because it's easier .

What equipment do I need for this recipe?

The only equipment you need for this recipe is a slow cooker. All you need to do is dump everything into a slow cooker and let it cook!

Amazing! This is a go to favorite when we get stuck in the "I don't know what do you want to eat?" rut.

We love to serve over rice, greens, in a burrito, etc to make it feel like a different meal every time!

Hi Jordan,

I have a question about using frozen chicken—is there a change in time (or should I defrost the chicken before I put it in the slow cooker)? I am a beginner, so sorry for the probably stupidly obvious question!

Thx

Hi Amy, no such thing as a stupid question! I'd recommend thawing the chicken before putting into the slow cooker as the cook time will take much longer from frozen and there's a chance the meat will sit in "the danger zone" for too long. BUT, technically you can cook from frozen — there's just a slight risk involved with the meat cooking safety, according to guidelines. Hope that helps!

SO GOOD! The sweet kick this recipe has is perfect! We added cheese & bacon all on sweet Hawaiian buns. Will definitely make again!

I’m so excited to make this for my next meal prep session. I don’t have a slow cooker- how can I adapt this for oven cooking?

Hi Catherine,

I think the best way to simulate a slow cooker experience in the oven is to use something like a dutch oven or other big, oven-safe pot at a low temperature. I've replicated oven recipes in the slow cooker and vice versa using this method. How low you go in temperature depends on how much time you have—I use a food thermometer and check every so often.

One of my favorite meals to meal prep. I love the balance of the honey and sriracha. Served it over rice and it was so flavorful.
