This is the BEST protein French toast recipe. Perfecting French toast means mastering flavor and texture in a repeatable process: this recipe delivers on all fronts AND gives you 33g of protein while you’re at it.

You don’t need the whole history of French toast. You don’t need to know that some people have called it Poor Knights of Windsor (or maybe you do, I don’t know your life). Face it: you really just want to make something tasty and get some nutritional benefits while you’re at it.

Enter the BEST protein French toast recipe. What makes it the best? You get to use your favorite bread AND your favorite protein powder in the same recipe.

Incorporating protein powder into your French toast batter is an ingenious way to get the added benefits of a nutritional supplement in a way that doesn’t involve drinking a shake for breakfast.

Other protein recipes

Want to see other ways that protein powder can amp up a recipe? Try some pumpkin protein waffles, cookies & cream overnight oats, or a protein pancake skillet.

Protein French toast recipe

Standard French toast recipes already have a bit of “built-in” protein in by way of eggs and milk. So there are two ways that this recipe can get that protein-per-serving count even higher.

One of those I discussed above: the protein powder that mixes into the batter. The other place that higher protein can enter the picture is in the bread.

What bread should I use for protein French toast?

If you didn’t know, there is a whole market for high-protein bread. While health-focused breads tend to draw skepticism from people who are worried about taste, in this case protein-dense breads are actually an improvement on good-ol’ white bread.

The biggest reason for this is that a good, hearty bread (like Trader Joe’s Organic Ancient Grain and Seed bread) actually stands up better to the batter without getting soggy.

Ingredients for high-protein French toast

Like a typical French toast recipe, there isn’t a whole lot to making this protein French toast. Here’s what we’ve got for ingredients:

  • thin-sliced bread (go high-protein!)
  • egg
  • vanilla protein powder (I use 2 scoops of Clean Simple Eats vanilla protein—use code JORDO for a discount!)
  • almond milk
  • cinnamon
  • optional (but recommended) toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar

Not too bad, right? You can do this!

Substitution ideas for French toast

  • kind of bread
  • egg whites for higher-protein option
  • type of protein powder
  • any toppings you want!

Thin-Sliced bread options

I like to use a thin-sliced bread for this recipe because it creates more volume and gets crispier. Here are some thin-sliced bread options:

  • Dave's Killer Bread 100% Whole Wheat Thin-Sliced Bread (found at many grocery stores)
  • Trader Joe's Organic Ancient Grain & Seed Bread (found at Trader Joe's)
  • Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Thin-Sliced Bread (found at Target)
  • your local grocery store probably has a version!

Easy French toast recipe

Here’s how to make this goodness for yourself:

  • Mix 1 egg, 1 serving protein powder, milk, and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Then stir vigorously until well combined.
  • Dip pieces of bread into the mixture and cover completely.
  • Heat up a larger skillet over medium high.
  • Spray skillet with cooking grease.
  • Add bread to the skillet and cook for 2 mins on one slide. Flip and cook for another minute, then repeat this process until all the bread is cooked.
  • Top with syrup and powdered sugar. Enjoy!

How to make French toast crispy

While this depends on using a good, sturdy bread and not over-soaking in the batter, another way you could get a bit more crispy with it is to lightly toast before dipping in the batter. Don’t over-do it, though—the bread will “toast” a bit in the skillet as well.

Do I need to use protein powder?

You already know the answer—you don't have to do anything. But maybe you're feeling a bit weird about adding a couple scoops into your egg mixture.

I totally get it! But if you're looking for ways to sneak more protein into your diet, I promise there are few recipes that work this smoothly.

The powder really blends right in with the batter. It doesn't make things grainy or cause them to taste weird. It just makes good french toast.

YUM YUM YUM! Great work, Jordo! This is the perfect high protein breakfast for a childhood favorite 🙂 this is the perfect amount of food + the bread gets nice and crispy. I ended up using two servings of egg whites instead of an egg, and it worked great!

Ok WOW. First time making French toast and I was blown away by how easy the recipe was and how delicious it was. I used PEScience vanilla protein powder and it worked great. I recommend topping it with maple syrup, a little bit of cinnamon sugar and Swerve’s confectioner’s sugar. Definitely going to be a breakfast staple in this house!!

This was delicious! I used high protein thin-sliced bread and egg whites from the carton. I couldn’t even taste the protein powder (I used chocolate flavor) in the recipe. I froze the leftovers and fed a couple of slices to my husband. He loved it!

This French toast is delicious!!! It’s hearty and sweet and wonderful. I usually only make two pieces because that’s enough to fill me up. Highly recommend!

Tried this for the first time this past week and my husband asked if it can be our new Sunday breakfast! Can’t taste the protein powder (which I was worried about) I will try smaller bread pieces next time cause I was full after once slice!

Love this recipe! I am very picky about breakfast foods and usually eat the same things. This has really added some flavor into my mornings, and something different into my routine! It is so easy to make, and keep prepped for the week. I am always so full after eating only a couple pieces!
